Description

Jan Zach was born in Czechoslovakia where he received his artistic training at the Superior School of Industrial Arts and at the Academy of Fine Arts. While there, he became familiar with the work of Zdenek Pesanek, a pioneer of lumio-kinetic sculpture. Pesanek incorporated electric lights into his sculptures to enhance the sense of space within the works, an idea that impressed Zach and led him to explore the concepts of light and space in his own designs. Zach left Czechoslovakia in 1939, and after extended stays in Brazil and Canada, he accepted a position as a professor of sculpture at the University of Oregon in 1958. He retired from the University in 1979
