Paul Horiuchi was born Chikamasa Horiuchi on April 12, 1906, in the village of Oishi, on the shores of Lake Kawaguchi, near Mount Fuji. (wikipedia) U.S. citizen; immigrated to the U.S. from Japan; self-taught artist http://www.historylink.org/index.cfm?DisplayPage=output.cfm&file_id=3829 Happy Birthday to Paul Horiuchi, creator of several pieces in our collection. Born April 12, 1906 in Japan, Paul immigrated to the US in 1920, learned Spanish while working on the railroads at 15 years old, wrote and produced a Kubuki play in small-town Wyoming, converted to Catholicism to marry his wife Bernadette, and opened a car body repair shop in Spokane in 1944. After an accident left him unable to work, he began selling paintings (which he had been painting for years, with no formal training) to support his family, and his art career was born. There have been many exhibitions of his work throughout the Northwest, including at the JSMA in 1969. He was designated as a Sacred Treasure of Japan, Fourth Class, by the Emperor of Japan in 1976.
