Description

Charles "Max" Nixon received his BFA from the University of Kansas in 1939. Completed a 17' WPA limestone sculpture in 1942 in Newton, KS, "Mennonite Settler." He expanded his studies in ceramics, weaving, jewelry and metalwork at Mills College, California. In 1950 Nixon took advanced workshops at the School for American Craftsmen in Rochester, New York, taught by Swedish silversmith Eric Von Flemming. It was here that Nixon learned to create forms from sheets of metal. In 1956 Nixon came to the University of Oregon to teach jewelry and metals in the art department. He retired in 1981.
